Gallery Opening Press Release Taina’s Art Gallery announces the ribbon cutting* and opening reception for the Inaugural Exhibition, which will be held at 2055 Carter Hill Road, Montgomery, AL 36106 from 4:00pm-8:00pm on May 4, 2007. Taina’s Art Gallery is Montgomery, Alabama’s newest fine art gallery established to provide a structured supportive environment that will increase representation of artists of the African Diaspora. Kenneth Davis brings his experience as the Curator of Exhibitions at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute (2004-2006), to the Montgomery area. He states, “There is a need for representation of artists of the African Diaspora. When you go into museums and galleries, a lot of the time you do not see fine art created by Black artists.” The Gallery Director, Karina Polen-Davis, is a native of Puerto Rico where she gained an appreciation for Afro-Caribbean art and she expresses that, “My husband and I plan to expose the many contemporary artists from across the world that all have a story to tell through their artistic creativity.” Through exhibition workshops and outreach activities, these Tuskegee University alumni plan to increase awareness of talented artists through Taina’s Art Gallery. The Inaugural Exhibition will feature twelve artists whose styles are diverse and who work with a variety of media which include oil on canvass, acrylic on wood, print making, sculpture and chalk pastels. The show will feature a broad range of original artwork from the following artists: Ahmad Austin - Birmingham, AL; Al Blackman - Tuskegee, AL; Amy Bryan - New Orleans, LA; Cicely Carew - Brooklyn, NY; Shaun Coffman - Rosenberg, TX; Shanequa Gay - Atlanta, GA; Miguel Hernandez - Santurce, Puerto Rico; Bayunga Nsimba Kialeuka - Kinshasa, Congo (DRC); Janie McGee - Columbia, MD; Betty Refour - Oklahoma City, OK; Akeem Wayne Scott - Niceville, FL; and Jerome White - Cleveland, OH.
